  Research in this area will examine the politics of regulatory change associated with corporate accountability and, in particular, the role that non-state actors are playing in business regulation through a variety of multi-stakeholder initiatives that set standards governing the social, environmental and human rights performance of transnational corporations and other enterprises. This project aims to assess the potential and limits of this approach from a perspective that considers the situation of developing countries and subaltern groups, as well as issues of democratic governance.

  This research project will build on The United Nations Research Institute for Social Developmen's (UNRISD) prior work on Commercialization, Privatization and Universal Access to Water and take the inquiry further in order to investigate the effects of private sector involvement in water supply in terms of access, equity and affordability.
• Commercialization, Privatization and Universal Access to Water (2003 - 2004)
  This new United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) project is set to explore a range of experiences of water service provision, focusing in particular on those actively involving the private sector. It will shed light on some of the real impediments that have prevented governments and the private sector from bringing clean water to the poor, as well as the role that regulation and regulatory institutions have been playing in the water sector. The project has two major objectives: to clarify the nature of the “efficiency and equity” tradeoff that is apparently affecting the provision of water services in developing countries, and to identify the institutional constraints to achieving universal access to water.
