Funding

UNRISD maintains its autonomy to undertake independent research and provide a neutral ground for policy discussion by remaining financially independent of the United Nations general budget. We rely for funding of our core activities entirely on voluntary contributions from governments and other donors. In supporting UNRISD, these donors contribute to the assurance of a diversity of views and voices on development issues at the highest level in the global system.

In 2020, the latest year for which audited accounts are available, IPSAS-based expenditures amounted to USD 2.661 million.

In 2021, the governments of Sweden, Switzerland and Finland provided institutional funding to support the overall programme of work, as did the Robert Bosch Stiftung. The government of Germany provided support for an UNRISD office in the UN campus in Bonn focused on research uptake and the Global Research and Action Network for a New Eco-Social Contract. The government of Spain (Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation) began providing support for the Gender Justice and Development programme.

The following funding partners are providing earmarked support to our research and activities in 2021: Centre for Social Entrepreneurship Studies, Coventry University, German Society for International Cooperation, Global Social Economy Forum, Government of Mexico (National Institute for Women / INMUJERES), International Labour Organization, Kentro Merimnas Oikogeneias Kai Paidiou, Korea International Cooperation Agency, Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, Statistics Korea, Switzerland (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs) and University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland.

In most cases, the sources of funding for specific projects and events are indicated on the relevant project and event pages on this website.

UNRISD is grateful to all our funders, past and present, for their support of our work.
