UNRISD Director Taking Part in MDG Summit Partnership Event in New York

UNRISD Director Sarah Cook will discuss the UNRISD 2010 Flagship Report, Combating Poverty and Inequality, during a MDG Summit Partnership Event in New York.

Sarah will give her talk in the North Lawn Building (room CR 5 NLB) at UN Headquarters on 17 September 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Other speakers include Jomo Kwame Sundaram from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and Andrew Shepherd from the Chronic Poverty Research Centre.

Poverty reduction is a central feature of the international development agenda. At the Millennium Summit, world leaders agreed to social development objectives and strategies to significantly reduce poverty by 2015. Yet poverty and inequality persist: if current trends continue, approximately one billion people will be living in extreme poverty in 2015.

The UNRISD report argues that reducing poverty and inequality depends not only on economic growth, but also on comprehensive social policies and politics that elevate the interests of the poor. As such, the report lays out a range of policies and institutional measures that countries can adopt to alleviate poverty and inequality. It will thus be of interest to policy, scholarly and activist audiences.
