International Conference Organized by UNRISD and Seoul National University on Global and National Strategy for Poverty Reduction to Take Place on 28-29 September

UNRISD and the BK21 program of the Graduate School of Public Administration, Seoul University, are organizing an International conference on the subject of ‘Global and National Strategy for Poverty Reduction’ on 28-29 September 2009.

We are witnessing a changing world and the global recession has forced many governments in the developed world to change their paradigms of public policy. However, during this difficult time we should also pay special attention to poverty in developing countries. This international conference aims to discuss poverty-reduction policies in the context of economic and social development.

Distinguished scholars and experts from the UNRISD research network will present some of their findings on Poverty Reduction and Policy Regimes at this conference in Seoul. The presentations will compare poverty reduction policies in different countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe from a policy-regime perspective and aim to answer how different policy regimes have affected the poor.

While examining different countries’ experiences of poverty reduction, the conference will also discuss the policy regime in Korea that enabled the country not only to manage successful economic development but also to reduce poverty effectively.
