UNRISD Director Sarah Cook is presenting the 2010 Flagship Report,
Combating Poverty and Inequality: Structural Change, Social Policy and Politics, at an expert talk organized by the German Development Cooperation (GTZ) headquarters in Frankfurt, on 8 October at 11am.
The Division of Sustainable Social Development at the GTZ is hosting the talk, which will focus on inequality and means to successfully reduce it.
To achieve sustainable social development, social cohesion, reliable and remunerated employment and political participation are necessary, according to the UNRISD report.
Poverty reduction is a central feature of the international development agenda. World leaders agreed to social development objectives and strategies for achieving them at the Millennium Summit in 2000, with the goal of significantly reducing poverty by 2015. Yet poverty and inequality persist: on current trends, about one billion people will still be living in extreme poverty in 2015.
The UNRISD report argues that reducing poverty and inequality depends not only on economic growth, but also on comprehensive social policies and politics that elevate the interests of the poor. As such, the report lays out a range of policies and institutional measures that countries can adopt to alleviate poverty and inequality. It will thus be of interest to policy, scholarly and activist audiences.
