Popular Development and Democracy: A New Publication from Oslo University and UNRISD

On 12 June 2002, Researcher Olle Tornquist held a press conference at the University of Oslo, Norway, to mark the public launch of his new essay titled "Popular Development and Democracy: Case Studies with Rural Dimensions in the Philippines, Indonesia and Kerala".

The essay is co-published by UNRISD and the Centre for Development and the Environment of the University of Oslo (SUM).

What are the problems of standard democratization in the South? What are the Challenges and options for popular efforts at more substantial democracy to promote alternative development?

The present essay attempts to answer these questions.

This essay is based on case studies in theoretical perspective over a period of ten years in the different contexts of the Philippines, Indonesia and the Indian state of Kerala. It offers a summary of early conclusionsn and policy implications from this research for the UNRISD research programme on Civil Society and Social Movements. It is primarily designed for students, reflective activists and concerned practitioners.

Olle Tornquist is Professor of Political Science and Development Research at the University of Oslo. He has published extensively on radical politics, theories about politics and problems of democratization.
