UNRISD at the WSIS Second Preparatory Committee in Geneva, 17-28 February 2003

5 Feb 2003

UNRISD is participating in the Second Meeting of the Preparatory Committee (PrepCom-2) for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). PrepCom-2 will be held from 17-28 February 2003 in the ILO headquarters in Geneva (first week) and at the International Conference Centre Geneva ((ICCG) - second week).

UNRISD will have a stand at Prep-Com-2, from 24-28 February, at the ICCG, where it will be presenting its growing range of publications in the area of new information and communication technology. You are most welcome to visit the stand and meet with UNRISD staff members who will be present there.

UNRISD will hold a Press Conference on 25 February 2003 at the ICCG (Room 18) from 13:15-14:00 to launch its newly released book titled Global Media Governance: A Beginner's Guide. One the authors, Seán Ó Siochrú, Director of Nexus Research in Dublin, Ireland, will be presenting the book to the media.

Global Media Governance – A Beginner’s Guide identifies what are the key influencing forces and elements in media governance at the global level. As governance encompasses regulation, questions addressed include: Why do we regulate the various media at all? What currently are the major forms of global regulation, and how do they work? Who participates in, and who benefits from, media regulatory and governance structures? And what are the trends? The rising influence of the media underscores the importance of finding answers to such questions. The “Guide” fills an important void and is designed primarily for policy makers, scholars, activists, media and communication professionals.

The ICCG is located in the immediate proximity of the UN and other international organizations based in Geneva, notably the ITU. Accreditation is necessary to enter the site (please consult: www.itu.int/wsis) as there will be significant security presence there.

PrepCom-2 will begin consideration of a draft Declaration of Principles and Action Plan, to be submitted eventually for the approval of Heads of State attending the Summit in December 2003.

The World Summit on the Information Society itself will be held in two phases. The first phase of WSIS will take place in Geneva, hosted by the Government of Switzerland, from 10-12 December 2003. The second phase will take place in Tunis, hosted by the Government of Tunisia, in 2005.

UNRISD will share a stand with the wider UN system at the WSIS in December.

We look forward to seeing you at our stand and Press Conference ...
