UNRISD Director Sarah Cook will discuss the UNRISD 2010 Flagship Report,
Combating Poverty and Inequality, at the "Ten Year" conference hosted by the Chronic Poverty Research Center in Manchester, UK.
Sarah's talk will take place on 9 September 2010 at 6:30 p.m. in the main lecture hall at the University of Manchester. She will be joined by Michael Woolcock of the World Bank and Naila Kabeer of the Institute for Development Studies.
The conference marks the culmination of ten years of poverty research by the CPRC.
Poverty reduction is a central feature of the international development agenda. World leaders agreed to social development objectives and strategies for achieving them at the Millennium Summit in 2000, with the goal of significantly reducing poverty by 2015. Yet poverty and inequality persist: on current trends, about one billion people will still be living in extreme poverty in 2015.
The UNRISD report argues that reducing poverty and inequality depends not only on economic growth, but also on comprehensive social policies and politics that elevate the interests of the poor. As such, the report lays out a range of policies and institutional measures that countries can adopt to alleviate poverty and inequality. It will thus be of interest to policy, scholarly and activist audiences.
