An UNRISD research team will participate in the 12th General Conference of the
European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI), which is to take place from 24 to 28 June 2008 in Geneva. Under the title “Global Governance for Sustainable Development: The Need for Policy Coherence and New Partnerships”, the conference will investigate the current development global challenges, and it will present possible policy or governance models to meet those challenges.
On the first day of the conference, UNRISD will convene a workshop on “Rethinking Poverty Reduction Strategies: The Role of Social Policy” from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at Uni-Mail, University of Geneva. The workshop will provide an important input to the conference by concentrating on the legitimate role of the state in social policy, particularly for poverty reduction. UNRISD Research Co-ordinators – Yusuf Bangura, Katja Hujo, Naren Prasad, Shahra Razavi and Terence Gomez – will present findings from past and ongoing research on social policy and poverty reduction.
On June 25, as part of the first session of the Working Group on Europe and Latin America, UNRISD Research Co-ordinator Peter Utting, Manuel Mejido from the University of Geneva, and Gloria Carrion from the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) will present their paper on “The Changing Coordinates of Trade and Development in Latin America: Implications for Policy Space and Policy Coherence”. The presentation, taking place at Uni-Mail from 2.00pm to 4.00pm, will focus on the variety of trade regimes that have come to the fore in Latin America and on their effects on policy space and policy coherence. Case studies on Brazil, Chile and Nicaragua will be discussed.
During the first four days of the conference, UNRISD staff will be present with an information stand located in the Book Exhibition area at Uni-Dufour.
