ILO Decent Work Prize Awarded to Researcher in UNRISD Network

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has announced that Jayati Ghosh is a co-recipient of the 2010 Decent Work Research Prize. The Prize is awarded “in recognition of major scholarly contributions to the analysis of socio-economic relationships and policy instruments for the advancement of decent work”. Along with her co-recipient, international law professor Eve Landau, she will receive 5,000 USD and an invitation to present during the ILO's Governing Board session in Geneva in November 2011.

The first two chapters of UNRISD’s 2010 flagship report, Combating Poverty and Inequality, drew substantially from Ghosh’s 2008 background paper, Growth, Macroeconomic Policies and Structural Change. In addition, she was a collaborating researcher for UNRISD’s project on Globalization, Export-Oriented Employment for Women and Social Policy, which ran from 2000 to 2002.

Ghosh is a professor of economics at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning in the School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University in India, as well as the executive secretary of International Development Economics Associates (IDEAS).

The first Decent Work Research Prize was awarded in 2007 to Carmelo Mesa-Lago and former South African president Nelson Mandela. Mesa-Lago, the distinguished service professor emeritus of economics and Latin American studies at the University of Pittsburgh, also conducted research for UNRISD.
