John D. Stephens

John D. Stephens collaborated with UNRISD for the projects Poverty Reduction and Policy Regimes (2007-2010) and Social Policy and Democratization (2002-2005), for which he wrote a draft paper Democratization and Social Policy Development in Advanced Capitalist Societies, drawing on the analysis in his 1992 book on democracy and his 2001 book on social policy. He participated in the Poverty Reduction and Policy Regimes - Methodological Workshop (2007). At the time of his collaboration, Stephens was working on a study of the impact of neo-liberal economic reform of social policy in Latin America, Iberia, and the Antipodes.
Stephens received his B.A. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. from Yale University, USA. His main interests are comparative politics and political economy, with area focus on Europe and the Caribbean. He teaches European politics and the political economy of advanced industrial societies.

He is the author or co-author four books including Capitalist Development and Democracy (with Evelyne Huber and Dietrich Rueschemeyer, Chicago, 1992, Winner – Best Book in Political Sociology), and Development and Crisis of the Welfare State (with Evelyne Huber, Chicago, 2001, Winner – Best Book in Political Economy). He has also contributed articles to, among others, The American Political Science Review, American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, The British Journal of Sociology, Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Comparative Social Research, and World Politics.
