Anne Marie Goetz

Anne Marie Goetz is a Collaborating Researcher for the UNRISD research project When and Why Do States Respond to Women's Claims? Understanding Gender-Egalitarian Policy Change in Asia. For this project, she is preparing, with Robert Jenkins, a thematic paper on Governance Systems and Women's Claims-Making. She also collaborated with UNRISD on the Think Piece Series “Let's Talk about Women's Rights: 20 Years after the Beijing Platform for Action”. She wrote a think piece with the title "The New Cold War on Women’s Rights?". At the time of this collaboration, she was Professor at the Center for Global Affairs at New York University.
She previously collaborated with UNRISD for the projects on UNRISD Contribution to the Fourth World Conference on Women and on Gender Justice, Development and Rights, 2000-2008. For the project she published a Routledge volume Governing Women: Women's Political Effectiveness in Contexts of Democratization and Governance Reform, 2008. At the time of this collaboration, she was a political scientist and Senior Fellow of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, UK.

Her theoretical work relates to debates on accountability and good governance, and her empirical research has involved studies of poor people's anti-corruption initiatives, and the challenges of long-term institutional change and capacity-building in developing country service bureaucracies. She has conducted research in India, Bangladesh, Uganda, and South Africa. She is the author of Women Development Workers (2001); co-author of Contesting Global Governance (1999), editor of Getting Institutions Right for Women in Development (1997) co-editor of No Shortcuts to Power: African Women in Politics and Policy-Making (2003), and co-author of Reinventing Accountability: Making Democracy Work for the Poor (2004).
