Nitya Rao

Former Research Coordinator

Nitya Rao is External Research Coordinator for the project, When and Why Do States Respond to Women's Claims? Understanding Gender-Egalitarian Policy Change in Asia.
Nitya also collaborated with UNRISD for the project inception workshop for New Directions in Social Policy, 2014. For the workshop, she wrote the draft paper “Land Reform and Social Policy with a Focus on Women’s Rights".

Nitya is based at the University of East Anglia, where she is Professor of Gender and Development. She is part of UN Women's Expert Group on Rural Women's Economic Security. She is also a member of UN Women’s South Asia Regional Consultative Committee on Enhancing women’s economic agency and entitlements to land and productive assets. Her research interests include gendered changes in land and agrarian relations, migration, livelihood, food security and well-being in a context of growth, equity issues in education policies and provisioning, gendered access and mobility, and social relations within people's movements.
