Asef Bayat

Former Board Member

Asef Bayat was a member of the UNRISD Board from July 2013 through June 2019.
At the time of that collaboration with UNRISD, he was Catherine C. and Bruce A. Bastian Professor of Global and Transnational Studies and Professor of Sociology at the University of Illinois.

Mr. Bayat collaborated with UNRISD for the project Social Policy in Late Industrializers: Social Policy and Development Outcomes in the Middle East and North Africa, 2002-2004. For the project, he examined social policy and political regulation in the case of Egypt. Asef also authored an UNRISD paper Social Movements, Activism and Social Development in the Middle East, 2000.
