Abdul Rahman Embong

Former Collaborating Researcher

Abdul Rahman Embong collaborated with UNRISD for the project Poverty Reduction and Policy Regimes (2007-2010) and the flagship report Combating Poverty and Inequality (2006-2010), for which he participated in the Methodological Workshop and wrote a paper on Developmental State Capacity and Institutional Reform in Malaysia. At the time of his collaboration, Rahman Embong was a Professor in Sociology of Development at the Institute of Malaysian and International Studies (IKMAS) Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and President of the Malaysian Social Science Association. He holds a PhD in Sociology.
Rahman Embong has written numerous articles and books, including State-led Modernization and the New Middle Class in Malaysia; Southeast Asian Middle Classes: Prospects for Social Change and Democratisation (edited); Globalisation, Culture and Inequalities: In Honour of the Late Ishak Shari (edited); Southeast Asia into the Twenty First Century: Crisis and beyond (co-edited).
