Jìmí O. Adésínà

Former Board Member

Jìmí O. Adésínà was a member of the UNRISD Board from July 2013 through June 2019.
At the time of that collaboration with UNRISD, he was Professor and holder of the DST/NRF SARChI Chair in Social Policy at the University of South Africa.

Mr. Adésínà has collaborated with UNRISD for a number of years. He collaborated with UNRISD for the project inception workshop for New Directions in Social Policy, 2014. For the workshop, he wrote the draft paper “Accounting for Social Policy: Reflections on Recent Developments in Sub-Saharan Africa” and was a speaker at the UNRISD Seminar Series/UNOG Library Talk, “New Directions in Social Policy: Towards a Post-2015 Agenda”, April 2014.

He was the External Research Coordinator for the UNRISD sub-project on Social Policy in sub-Saharan Africa within the project titled "Social Policy in a Development Context" (2000-2005). He has a chapter, Social Policy in a Mineral-Rich Economy: The Case of Nigeria, in the 2012 volume Mineral Rents and the Financing of Social Policy.

Mr. Adésínà has taught and conducted research in development, labour studies and social theory at the Department of Sociology of Rhodes University, South Africa. He was trained at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and at Warwick University, UK. He taught for several years at the University of Ibadan and served as head of the Department of Sociology. He was a senior research fellow at the Centre for Econometric and Allied Research (CEAR) at the same University. Mr. Adésínà has at various times taught at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, and had been a visiting scholar at UNRISD, ECA/JASPA in Addis Ababa, and the University of Ulster, Derry, Northern Ireland. He has published widely on labour, development studies and social theory.
