Maria Victoria Avilés Blanco

Maria Victoria Avilés Blanco was a research assistant at UNRISD from April 2004 to April 2006. She worked on projects related to HIV/AIDS, commercialization and privatization of water, and macroeconomics and social policy.
An economist, she graduated from the University of Malaga, Spain, and Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. She obtained an M.A. in Cooperation and Development from the European School of Advanced Studies in Pavia, Italy, in 1999, and MSc in Development Economics from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague, Netherlands, in 2003. In her final thesis "The determinants of malaria in Honduras from a socio-economic perspective" she developed a model based on the theory of Health Demand to analyze the determinants of malaria given the household, geographic, and socioeconomic conditions of individuals. Before joining UNRISD, Maria Victoria was employed in the Directorate General for European Affairs and International Cooperation of the Junta de Andalucia, Sevilla, Spain.
