Matthias Stiefel was Research Co-ordinator at UNRISD for projects Popular Participation, 1979-1986 and War-torn Societies, 1994-1998. For the Popular Participation project, Stiefel co-authored, with Marshall Wolfe, A Voice for the Excluded: Popular Participation in Development, Utopia or Necessity? Zed Books 1994.
