Anthony Bebbington

Former Collaborating Researcher

Anthony Bebbington collaborated with UNRISD on a number of projects. For the UNRISD flagship report Combating Poverty and Inequality (2010) he wrote a background thematic paper, Poverty Reduction and Social Movements: A Framework with Cases (published in November 2010 as Social Movements and Poverty Reduction). At the time of this collaboration, Bebbington was Higgins Professor of Environment and Society and Director of the Graduate School of Geography at Clark University, United States. He has previously collaborated with UNRISD for the project Financing Social Policy (2006-2010).Bebbington previously worked at the Centro Peruano de Estudios Sociales, Peru and the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. His main research areas address the political ecology of rural change with a particular focus on extractive industries and socio-environmental conflicts, social movements, indigenous organizations and livelihoods. Bebbington’s interest in rural organizations and social movements led to research on the performance and practice of non-governmental organizations in Latin America.
