Suzana Sawyer

Former Collaborating Researcher

Suzana Sawyer collaborated with UNRISD for the project Identity, Power and Rights: the State, International Institutions and Indigenous Peoples, 2006-2008. For the project, she co-authored with Terence Gomez a paper Transnational Governmentality and Resource Extraction: Indigenous Peoples, Mutlinational Corporations, Multinational Institutions and the State, 2008.
At the time of her collaboration, Sawyer was Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Davis, USA. Her research examines struggles over resources in Ecuadorian Amazon, focusing specifically on conflicts over land and petroleum development among indigenous peoples, the state and multinational oil companies. She is the author of Crude Chronicles: Indigenous Politics, Multinational Oil and Neoliberalism in Ecuador (2004).
