Contributed Session at the Resilience 2017 Conference: Resilience Frontiers for Global Sustainability
Finding environmentally sustainable and socially equitable solutions
The need to “Transform our World” for resilient and sustainable development has been internationally recognized: in September 2015, states committed to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals for people, planet and prosperity. While the Agenda is broad and ambitious, it uses the concepts of resilience and transformation normatively and does not specify what kind of policies are needed to support deliberate transformations to sustainability.
Identifying environmentally sustainable and socially equitable solutions requires unpacking the notions of transformation and resilience and analysing the politics at play. This session will cast light on selected policy approaches to transformative change and discuss different perspectives on transformation that shape the policy environment. We argue that deliberate transformations toward social-ecological resilience need to be supported by eco-social policies that prioritize these objectives in development strategies.
Informing global policy debates
Discussing key developments in policy approaches to resilience and transformation is crucial to advancing policy makers’ understanding and uptake at all levels of governance. During this UNRISD session, experts from different organizations and diverse research disciplines and will discuss the definition of transformative change that UNRISD proposes in its latest Flagship Report,
Innovations for Transformative Change, and combine examples from the international level with empirical case studies to advance understanding of the eco-social policy approaches that can bring about the transformation we want. Its objective is to inform global policy debates with an analysis of the processes of change required to promote sustainability and resilience.
