UNRISD Seminar Series with Dr. Xiao-Yuan Dong, Professor of Economics, University of Winnipeg, about Chinese Women's Paid Work and Unpaid Care Responsibilities during Economic Transition.


China has undergone major transformations that have moved the country from an agrarian and centrally planned economy, largely closed to foreign investment and trade, to one that has become increasingly industrialized market-oriented, and remarkably open and globally integrated.

The economic transformations have fundamentally changed the mechanisms for allocating goods and labour in both market and non-market spheres.

Dong will discuss the social and economic trends that intensify pressure on the care economy and on women in particular in playing their dual roles as caregivers and income-earners.

Her presentation will provide insights on a number of issues, such as

- How the reform process reshapes the institutional arrangements of care for children and elders

- How the changing care economy affects women’s choices between paid work and unpaid care responsibilities

- The implications of work-family conflicts for the well-being of women and their families
