A Global Policy Laboratory: Reforming Pensions in Developing and Transition Countries

Date: 12 May 2015

Pension systems are one of the most dynamic areas of social policy reform. But what is their developmental role? How does pension reform contribute to poverty reduction and social development? What are the reform trends, toward which models of pension policy, and what drives them?

In this UNRISD seminar, speakers will discuss the pension system reform strategies and outstanding challenges of powerful emerging markets, as well as selected countries in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

Drawing from country case studies, the speakers will provide evidence and insights on managing pension systems and how they can work to drive social and economic development.

Speakers

Katja Hujo, UNRISD Research Coordinator and editor Reforming Pensions in Developing and Transition Countries (UNRISD and Palgrave, 2014)

Fred Hendricks, Rhodes University, South Africa

Markus Loewe, German Development Institute (GDI)
"This book is a very useful analysis of diverse types of pension reforms in four continents (Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America), it has excellent case studies, fruitful comparisons between countries and within one country. The introduction and conclusions by Editor Katja Hujo harmoniously bring the volume together. Highly recommended."
Carmelo Mesa-Lago, Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Economics and Latin American Studies, University of Pittsburgh
