In collaboration with the
Heinrich Böll Stiftung Foundation, UNRISD is holding a closed workshop on ‘Religion, Politics and Gender Equality’ on 14-15 May in Istanbul, Turkey.
During the two-day workshop country-specific reports will be presented on the relationship between religion and politics, and their implications for gender equality. The reports span across eight countries: India, Iran, Israel, Nigeria, Poland, Serbia, Turkey and United States, that are part of the extensive research project on ‘Religion, Politics and Gender Equality’, conducted by UNRISD Research Coordinator Shahra Razavi and UNRISD Researcher Anne Jenichen, together with the Heinrich Böll Foundation.
The ongoing UNRISD project ‘Religion, Politics and Gender Equality’ focuses on the influence of religion in politics and in the relations between the sexes and women’s rights. The compatibility between democracy, human rights and gender equality on the one hand, and religion on the other hand is at the centre of a very controversial debate. The aim of the research project is to contribute to a better understanding of the various forms of public religion and their social and political consequences, including the implications for gender equality.
Both UNRISD and the
Heinrich Böll Foundation have a long history of research into integration of gender into development issues, with “Gender and Development” now a major research area on UNRISD’s 2005-2009 agenda.
The
Heinrich Böll Foundation is part of the Green political movement that has developed worldwide as a response to the traditional politics of socialism, liberalism, and conservatism. Its core values are ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self-determination and justice, with a special emphasis on gender democracy, meaning social emancipation and equal rights for women and men.
