Sustainable and Just Economies: Lessons Learned from the COVID-19 Crisis and Enabling Factors for the SDGs
UNRISD co-hosted a workshop at the 2020 edition of the SDGs Learning, Training & Practice—a series of capacity building and knowledge workshops held at the High-Level Political Forum, the official body for follow-up on achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The workshops featured speakers and experts from academia and other sectors on crucial topics related to the implementation of the SDGs under review in 2020.

Brief description of the course

The COVID-19 crisis and economic impact of the “Great Lockdown” has both highlighted the urgency of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and threatened to roll back progress made since 2015.

Ensuring that the recovery points towards a development model that delivers a triple bottom-line for prosperity, the planet and all people in light of the global pandemic requires coordinated and well-integrated policies to maximize opportunities for more and better jobs, social inclusion, and social justice. Consultation among the main stakeholders of the world of work is instrumental to achieve consensus and respect for labour rights and ensure that no one is left behind during the transition towards sustainable and just economies.

Action is needed to support the 2030 Agenda’s vision of an equal and sustainable world, as well as renewed commitment from governments and businesses to ensure transparency, accountability, and clarity of decision making as well as align efforts towards a just, people-centred recovery during the Decade of Action launched to achieve the SDGs on time.
