In Celebration of International Women's Day: "Men, Where are the Women?" Swiss Agriculture 'Under' Gendered Eyes - An UNRISD Seminar

"Men, where are the women?" was the outcry of the Swiss Union of Female Farmers and Rural Women (USPF) in a press release in December 2010 that critiqued eight years of agricultural policies in Switzerland. Female farmers were upset that their contribution to farms’ agricultural revenues, and their role in the agricultural sector more broadly, was going largely unrecognized. Dr. Reysoo will discuss the mechanisms that make women’s role largely invisible when it comes to agricultural policies, and the lack of recognition of women’s substantial economic, social and cultural contributions to food production and the provision of ecological and social services that serve the collective interest.

A faculty member since 2000 at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID, Geneva), Dr. Fenneke Reysoo has conducted anthropological research with a critical gender perspective on issues of reproductive rights and population dynamics (Morocco, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Mexico, Mali and South Africa), masculinities and sexualities (Mexico, Mali), Islam and development cooperation (Burkina Faso) and child-relinquishment from birthmothers’ perspectives (the Netherlands, Vietnam). She co-directs a research project on Gender, Generations and Equality in Agriculture: Transformations of gender relations and images of masculinity and femininity in Switzerland. Dr. Reysoo previously held positions at Radboud University and Leiden University (the Netherlands), and was a visiting professor at the University of Neuchâtel, University Mohammed V (Rabat), Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana–Iztapalapa (Mexico City), and University of Bordeaux.
