Why We Need a New Eco-Social Contract for Just and Green Recovery from COVID-19—An Official Side Event of the 60th Commission for Social Development
Date: 8 Feb 2022
In this side event, proposed jointly by Finland and UNRISD, we will explore how to build solidarity between different actors and movements who are working towards a new eco-social contract and a just and green recovery from COVID-19, by integrating different perspectives on social, climate and environmental justice. It will draw on Finland’s experience of an eco-welfare state and on UNRISD’s work on the need for a new eco-social contract.
The current period of multiple crises, including the worst pandemic and economic recession in modern history, demands a timely response that catalyses dialogue and action now to begin building forward better towards resilient and sustainable futures. Finland and UNRISD will contribute to this endeavour by unpacking the different ideas behind existing social contracts, and discussing how to make the new eco-social contract more inclusive and climate-proof, and fit for the 21st century.
