Ethnic Conflict and Development

  • Project from: 1990 to 1993

The project was concerned with causes, patterns, processes and consequences of ethnic conflicts and the effectiveness of a range of cultural, political, constitutional and economic policies to resolve or manage such conflicts. Fourteen case studies addressed the specific issues of: historical origin and evolution of ethnic conflicts; interests and motives of the major social actors; role of economic, cultural, social and political factors; responsibility of the state, political parties, voluntary associations, religious groups and other organizations; relationship between ethnic conflicts and the broader development process; nature of external interests; and policies and mechanisms to prevent, contain or resolve ethnic conflicts.
