Conference News: Perspectives on Social Development Research at the Millennium

  • Report of the UNRISD International Conference, Rayong, Thailand, 26-28 May 1999 (CN 1)

A conference was held by the Institute as part of a year-long effort to review its research programme and to generate new ideas for future work. This, in turn, was related to a broader attempt to evaluate the role of the Institute in the development debate and to consider ways of improving the effectiveness of UNRISD activities. Twenty-two social scientists from Africa, Asia, Central Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Western Europe attended the meeting. Representatives from three regional research consortia (CLACSO, CODESRIA and EADI) were also present. Participants commented on how UNRISD currently operates and made suggestions for strengthening the role of the Institute in the development arena. They also debated priority themes for future research in each of the regions represented at the meeting, and ways of sharpening the Institute’s focus on future research in specific programme areas. The research programme currently under way at UNRISD benefited greatly from the inputs of the experts present at this meeting.
