Linkages between Population, Environment and Development: Case Studies from Costa Rica, Pakistan and Uganda
This monograph explores the linkages between population growth, environmental changes and development patterns in Costa Rica, Pakistan and Uganda. It suggests the need to take a cautious view of the relationship between population growth and environmental degradation. Case studies reveal that demographic changes have not been a significant factor in environmental deterioration, although the commercialization of production and certain state policies have undermined customary resource use and management practices. These policies have contributed to population concentrations in certain areas. Measures to reverse environmental damage have had limited success because of their narrow focus on fertility control and nature conservation. The author recommends further study for a better understanding of the complicated interaction between environmental changes, population dynamics and development processes.
