Conference Report: Development, Environment and People

Report of the Conference on the Social Dimensions of Environment and Sustainable Development, Valletta, Malta, 22-25 April 1992

This report presents a synthesis of the international conference on the Social Dimensions of Environment and Sustainable Development organized jointly by UNRISD and the Foundation for International Studies, University of Malta, in Malta in April 1992. The basic premise underlying the conference was that, despite their critical importance in any strategy for sustainable development, the social dimensions of environment had been largely neglected in public discussions and in the preparatory process of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. The objectives of the conference were, therefore, first, to increase awareness of the social issues involved in environmental degradation and rehabilitation in the Third World; second, to discuss relatively uneplored linkages between social institutions and environmental change; third, to formulate both specific and general policy recommendations which would promote the complementary goals of fostering social progress and maintaining environmental integrity; and fourth, to identify areas in which further research would be able to make a concrete contribution towards the resolution of the environmental and social problems facing the developing countries.
