Social policies and private sector participation in water supply – the case of Burkina Faso (Draft)

This study tries to evaluate the impact of private sector participation (PSP) in the water supply in Burkina Faso. Using household survey data and econometric models, it analyses the issues of access and affordability to safe water for the poor households. The study finds that with PSP access has increased, poor households spend less time accessing water and the efficiency of the public company has improved. These positive results are overshadowed by affordability problems for the poor that arose when social policies were dismantled.
